"To Do" List for New UCSB Summer Session Students

Following is a "To Do" list developed by the Office of the Registrar to help new summer session students navigate through the many tasks required of them.


  1. Return your Summer Session application including your Email address to have your PERM number and PIN information sent to you.

  2. Sign up for Financial Aid (if necessary).

  3. Move to Goleta or Santa Barbara area (if necessary):
    1. Residence Hall information
    2. Santa Barbara Newspress rental listings

  4. Prepare for Registration:
    1. Access GOLD to get your Appointment time for registering.
    2. Prepare a Registration Worksheet.
    3. View the Online Summer Session Catalog for times and course offerings.
    4. View the Online General Catalog for course descriptions and prerequisites (also available through GOLD).

  5. Register on GOLD (new students begin to register May 1). (DOWNLOAD: A PDF copy of the GOLD Registration process.)

  6. Activate your U-Mail. U-Mail is UCSB's official student email service to which university business correspondence will be sent. If you already have an email account that you would rather use, you can have your U-Mail forwarded to your preferred email address. To activate your U-Mail account, click here.

  7. Pay your fees from your BARC statement by the deadline.

  8. Update your address on GOLD.
    Dorm addresses are updated by Housing & Residential Services.

  9. Review your Personal Information on GOLD. (Changes should be reported to the Registrar’s office.)

  10. Pre-instructional tasks:
    1. Academic advising (if necessary).
    2. Take Placement Exams (if necessary).
    3. Go to ACCESS center to get your Student ID card.
    4. Figure out how to get around: Parking permits, Bus service, Bike registration.
    5. If you are an international student, get information about services, immigration issues, and opportunities to share your culture with others.
    6. Veterans (and their dependents) should meet with the Veterans' Representative at the Registrar's Office (if necessary).
    7. Information on making, managing, and spending your money.

      3. Financial Aid.
    8. Locate your classrooms before classes begin.

  11. Adjust your schedule on GOLD, if necessary.

  12. Purchase your books.

  13. Other useful information:
    1. Check out Gaucho Net at http://gnet.ucsb.edu.
    2. Check GOLD and U-Mail for messages periodically.
