"To Do" List for New UCSB Graduate Students

Following is a "To Do" list developed by the Office of the Registrar to help new graduate students navigate through the many tasks required of them.


  1. Return your Statement of Intent to Register (SIR) form to the Graduate Division. The Office of the Registrar will then issue your PERM number and PIN information.

  2. Make sure your Final transcripts are sent to Graduate Admissions.

  3. Sign up for Financial Aid (if necessary)

  4. Sign up for Housing (if necessary).

  5. Apply for a Health insurance waiver (if necessary).

  6. Complete your online Statement of Legal Residence.

  7. Veterans should file a Veteran's Benefit Request form.

  8. Prepare for Registration:
    1. Access GOLD to get your Appointment time for registering.
    2. Prepare a Registration Worksheet.
    3. View the Online Schedule of Classes for times and course offerings.
    4. View the Online General Catalog for course descriptions and prerequisites (also available through GOLD).

  9. Register on GOLD. (DOWNLOAD: A PDF copy of the GOLD Registration process.)

  10. Check for Registration Blocks on GOLD when you register.

  11. Activate your U-Mail. U-Mail is UCSB's official student email service to which university business correspondence will be sent. If you already have an email account that you would rather use, you can have your U-Mail forwarded to your preferred email address. To register for your UCSBnetID, which also activates your U-Mail account, click here.

  12. Pay your fees from your BARC statement by the deadline. (If your department pays your fees, be sure to check GOLD to confirm that your department has done so. If not, follow up with your department.)

  13. Move to Goleta or Santa Barbara area (if necessary):
    1. Review options for Graduate Student Housing
    2. Santa Barbara Newspress rental listings

  14. Update your address on GOLD.

  15. Review your Personal Information on GOLD. (Changes should be reported to the Registrar's office.)

  16. Pre-instructional tasks:
    1. Academic advising (if necessary).
    2. Attend Orientation for Graduate students.
    3. Consider attending Department Meetings during pre-instructional activities before classes.
    4. Go to ACCESS center to get your Student ID card.
    5. Figure out how to get around: Parking permits, Bus service, Bike registration.
    6. If you are an international student, get information about services, immigration issues, and opportunities to share your culture with others.
    7. Veterans (and their dependents) should meet with the Veterans' Representative at the Registrar's Office (if necessary).
    8. Information on making, managing, and spending your money.

      3. Financial Aid.
    9. Locate your classrooms before classes begin.

  17. Adjust your schedule during Pass 3 (if necessary).

  18. Purchase your books.

  19. Register to vote.

  20. Other useful information:
    1. Check out Gaucho Net at http://gnet.ucsb.edu.
    2. Check GOLD and U-Mail for messages periodically.
