"To Do" List for New UCSB Students

Following is a "To Do" list developed by the Office of the Registrar to help new students navigate through the many tasks required of them.


  1. Complete your Visitor application, including your email address, at your home campus. Upon approval at UCSB, confirm with your home campus that you are planning to attend UCSB. Your PERM number and PIN information will then be emailed to you.

  2. Find out about Housing in the area (if necessary).

  3. Prepare for Registration:
    1. Access GOLD to get your Appointment time for registering.
    2. Prepare a Registration Worksheet.
    3. View the Online Schedule of Classes for times and course offerings.
    4. View the Online General Catalog for course descriptions and prerequisites (also available through GOLD).
    5. Consult with your academic advisor at your home campus for course selections. (if necessary)

  4. Register on GOLD at your assigned appointment time. (DOWNLOAD: A PDF copy of the GOLD Registration process.)

  5. Register on your home campus for your non-UCSB courses (if necessary).

  6. Activate your U-Mail. U-Mail is UCSB's official student email service to which university business correspondence will be sent. If you already have an email account that you would rather use, you can have your U-Mail forwarded to your preferred email address. To register for your UCSBnetID, which also activates your U-Mail account, click here.

  7. Pay your fees at your home campus. Although your fees and tuition are billed through your home campus, you will still be responsible for any miscellaneous fees which are listed on your BARC statement from UCSB.

  8. Move to Goleta or Santa Barbara area (if necessary):
    1. Residence Hall information
    2. Santa Barbara Newspress rental listings

  9. Update your address on GOLD.

  10. Review your Personal Information on GOLD. (Changes should be reported to the Registrar’s office.)

  11. Pre-instruction tasks:
    1. Academic advising (if necessary).
    2. Take Placement Exams (if necessary).
    3. Go to ACCESS center to get your Student ID card.
    4. Attend Orientation for New and Returning students (if necessary).
    5. Figure out how to get around: Parking permits, Bus service, Bike registration.
    6. If you are an international student, get information about services, immigration issues, and opportunities to share your culture with others.
    7. Veterans (and their dependents) should meet with the Veterans' Representative at the Registrar's Office (if necessary).
    8. Information on making, managing, and spending your money.

      3. Financial Aid.
    9. Locate your classrooms before classes begin.

  12. Adjust your schedule during Pass 3 (if necessary).
    New registration and adds should be completed prior to the 5th day of instruction, (if possible).

  13. Purchase your books.

  14. Other useful information:
    1. Check out the Graduate Handbook.
    2. Check out Gaucho Net at http://gnet.ucsb.edu.
    3. Check GOLD and U-Mail for messages periodically.

  15. Register to vote.
