"To Do" List for New UCSB Students

Following is a "To Do" list developed by the Office of the Registrar to help new students navigate through the many tasks required of them.


  1. Complete and return your ICE application, including your email address, to the Registrar’s office at UCSB.
    Upon approval, your registration and fee payment will be completed by the Registrar’s staff. Your PERM number and PIN information will then be emailed to you.

  2. View the Online Schedule of Classes for times and course offerings.

  3. View the Online Catalog for course descriptions and prerequisites.

  4. Consult with your academic advisor at your home campus for course selections (if necessary).

  5. Activate your U-Mail. U-Mail is UCSB's official student email service to which university business correspondence will be sent. If you already have an email account that you would rather use, you can have your U-Mail forwarded to your preferred email address. To register for your UCSBnetID, which also activates your U-Mail account, click here.

  6. Update your address on GOLD.

  7. Review your Personal Information on GOLD. (Changes should be reported to the Registrar’s office.)

  8. Pre-instruction tasks:
    1. Attend Orientation for New and Returning students (if necessary).
    2. Figure out how to get around: Parking permits, Bus service, Bike registration.
    3. If you are an international student, get information about services, immigration issues, and opportunities to share your culture with others.
    4. Information on making, managing, and spending your money.

      3. Financial Aid.
    5. Locate your classrooms before classes begin.

  9. Purchase your books.

  10. Other useful information:
    1. Check out Gaucho Net at http://gnet.ucsb.edu.
    2. Check GOLD and U-Mail for messages periodically.
    3. Looking for someone?

  11. Register to vote.
