College Fee Waiver Program

The State of California offers a College Fee Waiver Program to children and dependents of service-connected disabled or service-related deceased veterans. This program is administered by the California Department of Veterans Affairs (CDVA).

Benefits are awarded on an academic year basis and students are required to reapply each year for continued benefits. For example; a student who submits the 2006-2007 eligibility letters from the County Veterans Service Office will receive the benefit from fall 2006 through Summer Session 2007. A student who plans to attend the 2007-08 academic years will need to reapply to receive the VA College Fee Waiver for these terms.

The VA College Fee Waiver will waive the Education and Registration fees only during fall, winter and spring quarters. During Summer Sessions, the unit fees are waived.

Students who are in the Freshman Summer Start program must contact a VA Program Representative if they want the VA College Fee Waiver to apply to this program.

If you are eligible to receive these benefits, contact your local County Veterans Service Office (CVSO). You may also call CDVA at (800) 952-5626, or visit their website at www.cacvso.org for more information or to download an application form. The local Santa Barbara County Veterans Services Office is located at:

Santa Barbara County Veterans Service Office
Robert Langley, VA Service Rep.
315 Camino Del Remedio
Santa Barbara, CA 93110

(805) 681-4500
FAX: (805) 681-4501

California Fee Waiver letters of eligibility should be submitted to the Registrar’s Office before the fee payment deadline to avoid late fee penalties.

Please Note: If you are approved for the Cal Grant, and are also approved for the VA College Fee Waiver, eligibility is limited to only one benefit. Therefore the Cal Grant will take precedence and automatically be applied to your BARC account; the VA College Fee Waiver will not be credited. However, the VA College Fee Waiver can be applied to a summer program, as the Cal Grant does not fund Summer Sessions.
