Preliminary Examinations for Foreign Languages
For: All entering new students in the College of Letters and Science who will continue study of a language begun in high school.
Students who have already earned college credit in a foreign language should note that regardless of the results of the Foreign Language Placement Examination, credit cannot be granted for any UCSB courses at the same level or a lower level than that already earned at another institution or through Advanced Placement Examination. Students are advised to enroll in language courses immediately since any delay may decrease their proficiency.
French
Placement into French 1-4:
Times: September-May; second Thursday of each month from 2:00-3:50 p.m

Italian
Placement into Italian 1-4:
Times: September-May; second Thursday of each month from 2:00-3:00 p.m.

Spanish
Times: Wednesdays, May 9, June 6, September 12, October 17, November 14, and December 12, 2007, from 9:00-10:00 a.m.

For All Other Languages
Prior to the first day of the quarter, contact the appropriate language department to learn the date and location of the examination. Results of the Foreign Language Placement Examination will determine proper placement into language courses at UCSB.
Analytical Writing Placement Examination (AWPE)
For: Students who have not satisfied the Entry Level Writing requirement prior to enrollment including: students admitted too late to take the September 2007 Systemwide AWPE, out-of-state students, and transfer students.
Time: Monday, September 24, 2007, 8:00 to 10:00 a.m.
Location: Campbell Hall.There is a $65 fee for this examination. The exam may be taken only once. Preregistration is not required. Please bring photo identification and a pen.
Exempt are students who scored 680 or above on the writing section of the SAT Reasoning Test (or on the SAT II: Subject Test in Writing taken before June 2004) or who received a score of 3 or above on the Advanced Placement Test in English (literature or composition). Students in these categories should not take this test. Also exempt (from AWPE) are transfer students who have earned a grade of C or higher in an equivalent to Writing 2, prior to transfer.
English Language Placement Examination (ELPE)
For: All incoming graduate and international undergraduate students for whom English is not their first language.
Written Section: Friday, September 21, 2007, 8:00 to 10:00 a.m.
Location: Lotte Lehman Concert Hall.Oral Section: (For graduate students only). Appointments are made at the end of the written section. The oral section of the exam is approximately ten minutes.

Algebra Diagnostic Test (ADT)
For: Every student intending to enroll in Mathematics 3A or 15 must take the Algebra Diagnostic Test (ADT). A minimum score of 32 is required for enrollment in Mathematics 3A. A minimum score of 22 is required for Math 15. The test can be taken online at: http://math.ucsb.edu/ugrad/adt
This examination covers those parts of algebra and trigonometry most used in calculus. The results of the online test will be available immediately. Any student with questions about the test results or about mathematics courses in general is encouraged to consult a mathematics advisor in South Hall 6607.
Results on the Algebra Diagnostic Test are substantially improved by reviewing algebra and trigonometry prior to taking the exam. A copy of Precalculus Review Topics may be purchased at the UCSB Bookstore.
A student who has obtained a score of 2 on the College Board Advanced Placement Mathematics AB or BC examinations may register in Mathematics 3A without taking the ADT. Those obtaining a grade of 3, 4, or 5 should follow the suggestions under the Advanced Placement, College Board section of the UCSB General Catalog.

Music Theory/Musicianship Placement Tests
Incoming music majors, whether freshmen or transfers from other institutions or UCSB departments, must take the departmental exam for placement in the theory program.
Placement Auditions
Placement auditions are given in piano, voice, and instruments for all students who wish to study privately. Please bring your instrument and music; the department will furnish an accompanist. Contact the Music Department for details, and to sign up for a specific time and location.
Class Piano Placement Audition
All incoming music majors who are not piano majors must take an audition for placement in the class piano sequence. Please contact the Music Department for further details, and to sign up for a specific time.
All non-majors wishing to enroll in a basic piano class are also required to take the audition.
Teaching Credential Information Meetings
All students interested in credential programs at UCSB should attend one of the information meetings which provide specific information regarding prerequisites, requirements for admission, application procedures, and structure of the credential programs.
Students who are interested in teaching as a profession should attend a preprofessional experience orientation meeting, which usually follows the informational meetings. Classroom experience is a requirement before entering the Teacher Education Program and can be documented through the Preprofessional Education Program.

Health careers information meeting
For: Primary pre-medical students and pre-dental students.

Undeclared Students
For: All students in the College of Letters and Science who have not declared their majors. College advisers will discuss program planning and the services of the Letters and Science program.

Military Science
For: Students interested in obtaining information on the Army ROTC program.
Time: Tuesday and Thursday, September 25 and 26, 10:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
Location: Building 451, Room 117.
At these required meetings, new students will be informed of departmental procedures and advising systems. Those students who have not formally declared a major are invited to attend the meeting for undeclared students listed above. They may also attend one of the meetings of those majors in which they may be interested. Please refer to the chart below for meeting locations.
Students who are unable to attend may consult their departmental office with questions concerning their majors.

Orientation Program and Academic Advising for all New Undergraduate Students Who Missed Summer Orientation
New students, both first quarter freshmen and students with advanced standing, who have not already attended Summer Orientation or a college advising session should attend. The programs include essential information on academic requirements, the registration process, campus services, and important deadlines.
For New Freshmen: Tuesday, September 25, 10:00 a.m-5:00 p.m., Buchanan 1910. Information on the event will be mailed in August to the permanent address of every student who did not attend Summer Orientation. Reservations are required.

Orientation Meeting and Service Fair for all New Graduate Students
Time: Wednesday, September 26, 9:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
Location: Campbell Hall.New graduate students should attend this meeting to receive important information about registration, academic and financial support through the Graduate Division, Graduate Students Association, and other campus resources. A student-run panel discussion will also be offered. A service fair featuring campus organizations will be held in front of the University Center from 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Discovery Days Activities
For: All new and returning students.
Time: Monday, September 24, through Wednesday, September 26.Discovery Days is a student orientation program that occurs the first week of fall quarter. The schedule of events is published in a calendar mailed to all new students inside a copy of the Daily Nexus before they arrive on campus. You are encouraged to participate in the wide variety of activities highlighted in the calendar. During the week, Orientation Staff will be available in various locations around the campus to answer questions and provide information. New Student Convocation
For: All new freshmen and transfer students.

Location: Faculty Club Green.New freshmen and transfer students are expected to attend this campus ceremony designed to welcome and induct new students into the university community.

Teaching Assistant Orientation
Time: Tuesday, September 25, 9 a.m.-1:00 p.m.
Location: Campbell Hall.A required program for all first-time Teaching Assistants (TAs), graduate student Readers, and undergraduate Readers at UCSB. The day includes campus speakers, a panel discussion by experienced TAs, and two workshop sessions. Workshop topics include: Teaching Problem Solutions; Leading Discussion Sections, Grading Student Writing, Introduction for International TAs, Leading Lab Sections, and many more.
